Casa Mirador, Costa del Sol holiday villa, is in Gaucin
Gaucin, in which our Costa del Sol holiday villa to rent is situated, is a picturesque mountain "white" village or pueblo blanco, with white houses and narrow streets and situated against the backdrop of the Serrania de Ronda, with its dramatic scenery and tranquil countryside. It is perched on the hillside over 600 metres above sea level and due to its strategic position has a fascinating history going back to Roman times. The pace of life is restful and relaxing and local people are genuinely welcoming. The village's whitewashed houses and terracotta roofs, spread across the hillside, mark it as one of the special pueblos blancos of Andalucia. The village is overlooked by the ruins of its historic castle, Castillo del Aguila (Eagles' Castle) and enjoys spectacular views down the valley of the Genal River to the Costa del Sol, Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains of North Africa.
Gaucin has over 2000 inhabitants, about 10% of whom are northern European ex-pats, mostly Brits. Its occupation by the British however is not a recent thing - they have been living in Gaucin in some numbers for over 100 years and have been generally welcomed by the locals.
There are several excellent restaurants and tapas bars in the village and nearby areas as well as small supermarkets, banks and other shops - in fact everything for all everyday needs. In the evenings, there is a choice of restaurants, bars and night clubs including a flamenco bar. Other facilities comprise riding stables, guided walks, a tennis court and a beauty spa.
Gaucin is surrounded by beautiful countryside and the area is of particular interest to those who enjoy walking and bird watching, as it is on the main migratory route from Europe to North Africa. The area offers many walks with interesting flora and fauna and, by car, drives to the many pueblos blancos of Andalucia. The Costa del Sol and its numerous golf courses, is approximately 30 minutes drive and the Atlantic beaches of the Costa de Luz are accessible within one hour's drive.
Gaucin is less than one and a half hours drive from Malaga Airport, one hour from Gibraltar and two hours from Jerez, each of which also have airports with regular scheduled flights from UK airports.
"Locals joke that driving along these mountain roads is more like flying, not least where the Pass of Doves offers dizzying view to the peaks of the other mountains. Laid out over a series of hills, the village has the best views of any of the Pueblos Blancos with breathtaking vistas down the Genal River valley to the Costa del Sol coast with Gibraltar and Africa floating on the horizon"
