The area around Gaucin

The local scenery is stunning in the vicinity of Gaucin and our holiday villa, Casa Mirador.

A good day out would be to take a circular drive round different parts of the area, stopping for lunch at a local venta or taking a picnic. This would be likely to take in the Parque Natural de la los Alcornocales (cork oak trees) or the other Parques Natural slightly further afield.

One of the best known sights in Andalucía are the picturesque white villages dotted around the mountains. There are many close by such as Benarrabá, Benalauría, Cortes, and Jimena de la Frontera each with its own special characteristics. Pick a couple, visit one at lunch time, and have a wander round.

Across the Genal river valley from Gaucin and Benarraba are the two white villages of Genalguacil and Jubrique. Genalguacil in particular is worth a visit, now rated a ‘pueblo museo’ it features outdoor artwork, sculptures and so on, dotted around its pretty streets.

After visiting Jubrique continue up the hill over the pass and down into Estepona and enjoy stunning views of the coast from the top and all the way down.

Further up into the mountains, Grazalema is recommended, as is Olvera further inland and further on, Zahara de la Sierra is in a stunning location overlooking a huge reservoir.

Closer to Ronda is the little town of Setenil las Bodegas, where many of the houses are built into the rock. A good place for a wander and a lunch at one of the outdoor cafes in the main square.

Arcos de la Frontera is well worth a visit, about an hour’s drive away.

A similar distance is Alcalá de los Gazules, highly rated by the Andalucía Rough Guide.

On the road to Manilva is a turning for Casares, probably the most frequently visited because of its proximity to the coast. It is quite touristy but the narrow streets, historic buildings, craft shops and restaurants and bars make it an interesting place to wander round.
